South Boulevard

The two center lanes of South Boulevard will close at the intersections of Carson Boulevard and Lexington Avenue on Monday, February 6 at 7:00 a.m. and will re-open on Monday, February 13 at 7:00 a.m. This lane closure is necessary for the South Boulevard and East Carson Boulevard 54-inch water main improvements project. Delays are expected on South Boulevard. Motorists can detour using Bland Street, Tryon Street and Stonewall Street.

Crews are repairing a water pipe under Carolina Place Parkway near Hwy 51 intersection (near Buca di Beppo Restaurant) starting Monday afternoon. The repair will likely take through Friday.

At least one lane will be open in each direction through the Hwy 51 intersection. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes or to allow more time to travel through this area.

7200 Block of Park Road Closed (Updated Sept 6)

The 7200 block of Park Road has been has been reopened to one lane in each direction. Repairs to the roadway and sidewalks will continue in this area for the next two to three weeks. During this time motorists can expect delays in the closure area and are advised to continue to seek alternate routes. Northbound traffic can detour around the closure via Sharon Road West, South Boulevard and Tyvola Road. Southbound traffic can detour around the closure via Fairview Road and Sharon Road.

Crews repaired a section of 24-inch water pipe that was installed in 1973. The type of pipe, pre-stressed concrete cylinder, is the same as the pipe that broke under Runnymede Lane in June.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities invests roughly $10 million each year to proactively find and replace older pipes, and millions more annually in new pipes that serve growth and reinforce the existing network. Parts of this 24-inch pipe have been replaced in the past. Utilities is assessing the condition of this pipe and others to prioritize replacing some sections or abandoning sections that are no longer needed to serve customers.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is working with Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) to rebuild Park Road and coordinating with Charlotte- Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), and Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) to ensure a safe construction area and safe detours for customers.

Lane to close on Sardis Road North for utility work

The outside, eastbound lane of Sardis Road North between Monroe Road and Independence Blvd. will close for utility work during the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17 through Friday, August 19.

Crews will be working in the area to clean the sewer line, and are part of a larger effort to keep the lines clear of grease and other obstructions in the system. Over time, kitchen grease and other fats, oils and greases that are poured down drains enter the sewer system and clog pipes as the grease hardens. These blockages can send wastewater backwards out of manholes and eventually into our waterways untreated.

Lightning strike damages Kingston Avenue in Dilworth (updated Friday, July 1)

During thunderstorms on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 28, lightning struck a water valve along East Kingston Avenue in the Dilworth neighborhood.

The strike to the valve damaged a water line and the road way. The road will open at 5:30 p.m. for the weekend. The road will close again on Tuesday, July 5 for final paving.

Nations Crossing and Woodlawn - updated 6:00 A.m.

Crews replaced several feet of a 12-inch water pipe near 4500 block of Nations Crossing and Woodlawn.

The pipe replacement was completed before 1 am and water service is back to normal. The road will be closed for repaving through Friday morning. The 4500- 4700 blocks of Nations Crossing will have at least one lane blocked throughout the repaving.

Drivers are encouraged to use South Boulevard or South Tryon Street as alternates through Friday evening.

Starting at 9:00am on 8/27/10 utilities crews will be closing down the 3300 block down to the 3800 block of Barclay Downs Drive. This is located between Ferncliff Road and Inverness Road. This closure is necessary so can safely make repairs on a water leak. The road will be closed for about 6 hours.

The detour in place will be: coming from Runnymede Ln and Barclay Downs- turn left on Ferncliff Rd, then turn right onto Colony Rd, then right on Roxborough Rd, and then a right on Morrison Blvd, and that will bring you back Barclay Downs Dr.

Coming from Fairview/South Park: Come down Barclay Downs Dr, then turn left on Inverness Rd, then turn left onto on Manning Dr, then right on Park Rd, then a right on Selwyn Rd, and then a right onto Runnymede Ln.

- NOW OPEN as of 2:15 p.m. August 6 -Southbound Remount Road from Watson Drive to West Boulevard will be reduced to one lane.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. August 5, 2010 through August 6, 2010, both southbound lanes of Remount Road from Watson Drive to West Boulevard will be closed. All traffic will use the left turn lane to travel southbound through the intersection. Appropriate adjustments to the traffic signal at Remount Road and West Boulevard will be made to address both through and left turn traffic from this lane.

Heavy congestion of southbound Remount Road is anticipated during peak traffic periods. Motorists are advised to avoid southbound Remount and use I-77 southbound to West Boulevard as an alternate. These lane closures are necessary for emergency repair work to a water main in Remount Road. Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained.
